Q: How do I care for my item of jewellery?
A: As silver items do tarnish when they are not worn regularly, an inexpensive silver polishing cloth can be purchased from any high street jeweller. Alternatively, you can dip your item in household soda powder. For every pint of very hot (not boiling) water use 1 tablespoon of soda powder. This is not recommended for an item with a gemstone.
Q: How do I tell if an item is sterling silver?
A: It is actually illegal to sell any item of silver over 7.78gms in the UK without a hallmark or a mark of fineness. The hallmark will include the mark of finess. The mark of fineness is '925' marked into the silver. This represents the UK standard of fineness and indicates that there are 925 parts silver and 75 parts copper. The copper is added to silver (alloyed) to give it strength.
The marking system also applies to gold. Most people will know that gold is 9ct or 18ct for example. 9ct gold is 375 parts gold and 18ct is 750 parts gold and quite often these are the numbers showing on the item. 18ct gold is a great deal softer than 9ct and over many years can wear out (for example 18ct gold wedding bands often wear thin having rubbed against the finger for many years). For gold the minimum weight before it is required to be marked in the UK is 1gm. Gold coins in historical coins were pure gold and because they were so soft were bitten to test if they were gold! If a silver item is under 7.78gm and is not marked, unless you are very familiar with the feel of silver, then you will not be able to tell if it actually is silver or silver plated.
If a silver item weighs under 7.78gm and is marked with the 925 mark, it is often means that it is imported and therefore it is a requirement of Customs for it to be marked in order to bring it into the UK.
Q: Will you set my own gemstone in a piece of jewellery? A: No. The properties and value of the gemstones which are used in the jewellery are a known factor to the designer, unlike a customer's own gemstone. A customer's own gemstone would therefore not be insured whilst in our silversmith's' posession.
